Cortes Island Lifestyle Series – Part 3: The Heartbeat of Community – Cortes Island’s Community Halls
By Jeramie Ellingsen, Real Estate Advisor
Cortes Island’s community halls are more than just buildings—they are the lifeblood of our island’s social and cultural fabric. Serving as venues for gatherings, celebrations, and essential services, these halls embody the spirit of community that makes Cortes Island a unique place to live.
Manson’s Hall
Located in the heart of Manson’s Landing, Manson’s Hall has been a central gathering place since 1922. Operated by the Southern Cortes Community Association (SCCA), the hall hosts a variety of events, including the weekly Friday Market, community meetings, and cultural activities. It also houses several non-profit organizations and services, such as the Cortes Food Bank and Cortes Community Radio. The hall’s rich history and ongoing contributions make it a cornerstone of island life.
Gorge Hall
Situated in Whaletown, Gorge Hall is managed by the Whaletown Community Club. Built in the early 1930s, it continues to serve as a venue for concerts, dances, weddings, and community meetings. The hall’s rustic charm and welcoming atmosphere make it a beloved space for both residents and visitors.
Klahoose Multipurpose Building
Near Squirrel Cove, the Klahoose Multipurpose Building serves as the community centre for the Klahoose First Nation. This beautifully designed space, featuring elements of Western Red Cedar, is used for meetings, cultural events, and community gatherings, reflecting the rich heritage and traditions of the Klahoose people.
Living on Cortes Island means being part of a community that values connection, culture, and collaboration. The island’s community halls are a testament to this ethos, offering spaces where neighbours become friends and traditions are both celebrated and created.
